MHK given benefit fraud figures

by isleofman.com 18th June 2008
The number of social security recipients defrauding the government has been revealed.

Twenty-five people were suspected of cheating the state during the last financial year, and were questioned under caution.

The total recoverable sum in relation to the overpayments is put at ?113,000.

Social Security Minister Eddie Teare says interviews under caution only happen in more serious cases, where a claimant's intention to commit benefit fraud needs to be queried.

Such interviews don't take place where trivial sums are involved or the circumstances suggest no dishonesty was intended.

The question was tabled by Peel MHK Tim Crookall (pictured).
