Minister explains care changes

The Health Minister says his department had no choice but to change its policy in relation to long-term residential care of the elderly.

Eddie Teare, who faced a barrage of questions on the subject in Tynwald yesterday, says the DHSS couldn't sustain existing methods of operation, and current and future service users had made it clear they would prefer to be looked after in their own homes.

Under the revised policy the department will no longer accept new admissions at three of its long-stay homes.

The DHSS was criticised for not giving Tynwald the opportunity to debate the change, but Mr Teare says a balance had to be struck:
