Kerbside collection approved

Environment Minister John Shimmin says he's delighted that Tynwald has approved the expenditure of ?750,000 to enable the Island's first large-scale kerbside collection scheme to get under way.

Sixteen thousand homes around Douglas, Onchan and Braddan will be given two colour-coded plastic containers into which they will separate out newspapers and magazines, as well as steel, aluminium, glass and plastics.

Mr Shimmin says the scheme will be a vital first step in recycling but adds there is much more that can be done, and will need to be done so that the energy from waste plant does not reach capacity:
