Minister defends 'care at home' policy

The DHSS Minister has defended his new nursing and residential homes policy, in the face of strong criticism in Tynwald.

A fortnight ago it was announced three of the department's four facilities would no longer accept new, long-stay admissions.

Eddie Teare was hit with a barrage of questions from both Keys and Legislative Council members as they expressed their concerns over the move, which will see many more people receiving care at home in the future.

There was also great irritation from some, who said there had been no consultation or debate in Tynwald before the decision was made.

But Mr Teare said his department had spoken to people affected by the policy change and they had welcomed the chance to be looked after in their homes:
