Island to sign conservation treaty?

by isleofman.com 28th May 2008
It's hoped the Isle of Man can become a full signatory to the Rio Convention on Bio-diversity in the near future.

The convention, which came out of the Earth Summit held in Rio in 1992, sets out three main goals. They are the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits from the use of genetic resources.

Agriculture Minister Phil Gawne (pictured), who was questioned on the subject in the House of Keys, said the convention had international recognition in the field of conservation (audio file attached):

The issue was raised by North Douglas MHK Bill Henderson.
