With the first practice session for TT 2008 just nine days away, race organisers have explained the provision of insurance cover for landowners and tenants bordering the Mountain Circuit.

A new letter sent out by Clerk of the Course Eddie Nelson says they will have third party public liability cover, under the race organisers' policy.

Previous correspondence advised the owners of around 30 properties deemed too dangerous for spectators to take out their own insurance.

The new letter from Mr Nelson makes it clear cover will be provided for injuries or damage resulting from a racing accident, regardless of whether it has taken place in a prohibited or restricted area, or on private property.

However, landowners charging race fans to spectate have a duty of care to the individuals concerned and are warned the liability of the organisers would be reduced. They are being told to seek independent advice.

The new letter also clarifies what would happen if there were injuries or damage as a result of a racing accident after signs for prohibited or restricted areas went missing.

It says the race organisers' insurance would still be effective, as it would be if there was an incident involving spectators who hadn't been moved on from such areas.
