'Roving voucher' scheme for anglers

by isleofman.com 27th February 2008
A new scheme to allow anglers greater access the Island's rivers is being explored by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.

DAFF is looking at a 'roving voucher' scheme, where landowners could permit fishing on designated sections of rivers in exchange for cash-reedemable vouchers.

The scheme would be a boon for visiting angler, who don't have time to track down landowners and ask for permission.

A recent survey of anglers showed that many have difficulties finding out where they can fish outside of the National Glens and members-only beats.

The voucher scheme being considered is similar to that run by River Trusts in the United Kingdom.

Anglers purchase vouchers in advance, then post the number required in a box before starting their day's fishing. The owner or tenant of the beat collects the vouchers later and redeems them for cash.

DAFF says there are many privately owned farmland watercourses offering excellent opportunities for adventurous anglers in beautiful surroundings.

There is also potential for a Manx roving voucher scheme to be compatible with those in the UK, so visitors to the Island ccould use their vouchers here with Island residents able to do the same in the UK.
