Select Committee on Immigration

The Tynwald Select Committee looking into issues surrounding immigration to the Island has been told many immigrants are highly qualified and already speak English.

Yesterday, the four strong committee chaired by Speaker of the House of Keys Steve Rodan heard evidence from the Trades Union Council, DTI Minister David Cretney, Dr Brian Stowell and the Island’s Filipino Association.

The committee asked whether immigrants should have to undergo an English test before being allowed to move to the Island.

But Juvy Pabellan of the Filipino Assocation of the Isle of Man said her countrymen have to undergo stringent tests and were well-qualified:
