Following today's verdicts, Mr Jones launched a stinging attack on the Island’s police force and what he called a 'waste of public money’ in bringing the case to court.
He said he was ‘very relieved the nightmare was now over' and said he had great sympathy for James Berry’s family.
However, he criticised the police for pursuing the case which, he said, needlessly prolonged the Berry family’s agony.
James Davis reports (audio file attached):
Mr Jones said he felt like he’d undergone 18 months of punishment while waiting for the matter to come to court and said he didn’t understand why the process had taken so long.
He poured scorn on the legal position of ‘innocent until proven guilty’ and said he’d been treated like a criminal.
He claimed he was falsely imprisoned for 17 hours after being arrested and said he hoped the force would next time have a valid case before taking such action.
He criticised the prosecution expert who, he claimed, repeatedly changed his theories and failed to appreciate the differences between the UK and Manx legislation.
Mr Jones said he was looking forward to getting his life back to normal after 18 months of stress and worry about the court case and concluded thousands of pounds of public money had been wasted when it was clear, he said, the prosecution case was woefully inadequate before the trial began.
