A man who made false statements to obtain social security benefits has been fined a total of ?500 by the High Bailiff.

Neil Patrick Dawson of Keppel Road, Douglas, admitted four offences.

Pam Butterworth, prosecuting on behalf of the DHSS, said the defendant, who was paid invalidity benefit, failed to inform the department that he was doing odd work as a labourer.

The defences were committed in May, August and September of last year. The overpayment amounted to ?1,378 which the defendant was ordered to repay with costs of ?150.

He told the court he was now off invalidity benefits, able to work and actively looking for a job.
