Farmers urged to avoid imports

Farmers in the Isle of Man are being urged NOT to import cattle for the time being - to prevent the spread of bluetongue disease here.

Imported livestock is thought to be the cause of an outbreak of bluetongue in Northern Ireland last week.

It came to light while a delegation from the province was in the Island to meet their Manx counterparts at the Department of Agriculture.

Minister Phil Gawne says it was a timely reminder of how outlying areas of the British Isles can safeguard themselves against the disease:
