Defendants speak at manslaughter trial

A Laxey man charged with the manslaughter of a teenage cyclist today (Monday) vowed on his ‘parent’s graves’, that repairs he carried out on a wagon, involved in a fatal accident, were done so correctly.

Forty-seven year-old Philip Firth and 52 year-old David Jones of Ramsey undertook work to fit a new brake drum days before a wheel from the truck struck 13 year-old James Berry in December 2005.

Today, both men took to the stand and insisted the work was done properly and safely.

Mr Fifrth, who said he was devastated and had become depressed by what had happened, also admitted making mistakes during subsequent police interviews.
