Coroner's warning to drinkers

by isleofman.com 12th February 2008
The Island’s Coroner, Michael Moyle has re-iterated concern over to extent to which some people drink.

He was speaking at the inquest of a Willaston man, whose body was discovered by a police officer at his home last month.

A verdict of accidental death was recorded on 60 year-old baker James Cannon, of Snaefell Road.

Mr Cannon’s body was found by an armchair, with a number of empty and near empty bottles of vodka nearby.

A combination of alcohol, which had possibly triggered epileptic fits, and some vomit which had entered Mr Cannon’s lungs, were cited as the reasons behind his death.

The court was told Mr Cannon had been seen by the drug and alcohol team over the past four years and, on occasions, had managed to reduce his drinking.

Coroner Michael Moyle said his warnings about the dangers of alcohol seemed to have little impact, whether he made them as Coroner or High Bailiff.

However, he re-iterated concern over the extent to which some people drank.

The amount of alcohol in the Island and the part it played in people’s lives was a concern he said, particularly those who drink to excess, not to say Mr Cannon did in this particular case.

He offered his condolences to the family and said it was a sad way to die.
