Major schemes for Tynwald to consider

by isleofman.com 8th February 2008
The Department of Transport will ask Tynwald to approve expenditure of ?44 million on two schemes, when it sits later this month.

The bulk of the money, ?41 million, is for a runway extension at Ronaldsway Airport and associated works, with the rest earmarked for the Peel Inner Harbour development.

The runway scheme has attracted a good deal of interest since it was first mooted in 2006.

One of the key opposers is Peter Karran MHK, who has questioned the need for such expansion. And, in the House of Keys on Tuesday, Malew and Santon MHK Graham Cregeen will ask whether there is evidence of the need for it from scheduled airlines currently using the airport.

The ?41 million will be spent on a rock armoured promontory, which will run about 245 metres into the sea; the resurfacing, strengthening and extension of the existing runway; and some taxiways.

The Peel Inner Harbour scheme will see the creation of 124 pontoon berths, very similar to the design in Douglas.
