'Crisis legislation' to be reviewed

by isleofman.com 5th February 2008
The Department of Home Affairs is to review the government’s emergency powers.

The move was revealed in the House of Keys this morning, in a written reply from the Minister, John Shimmin.

Rushen MHK Quintin Gill asked him whether he thought current legislation was still fit for purpose.

Mr Shimmin said there were some deficiencies, but added his department had more urgent priorities which meant he couldn’t give a timetable for any review.

Mr Shimmin said there were a number of Acts of Tynwald which gave emergency powers in times of crisis.

They included the Emergency Powers Act, the Civil Defence Act and the the Criminal Justice, Police and Courts Act.

He said the legislation was up to 70 years old, and it was obvious some of it wasn’t fit for the modern age.

Mr Shimmin (pictured) said the department wanted to review the current powers as soon as possible.
