Clarkson speaks out

by isleofman.com 3rd February 2008
Island resident and television personality Jeremy Clarkson has spoken of the ongoing problems on his land at Langness in a Sunday Newspaper article.

In a piece in the Sunday Times entitled 'Why government busybodies should leave our land alone', Mr Clarkson talks of various cases of landowners in the UK being penalised by authorities, despite trying to do their best for the land.

He claims officials often don't have a clear understanding of what landowners are doing and are too keen to penalise them for apparent breaches of the law, without being in possession of all the facts.

He goes on to explain how he has to comply with certain rules for his land on the Isle of Man, such as grazing sheep, harvesting crops from the inside of a field out, and avoiding fertiliser because the area at Langness is a site of special scientific interest.

However, he then has to allow dog owners on the land who allow their pets to chase the sheep and foul the footpaths.

He ends by saying 'that's the trouble with environmentalists - their love of wildlife is almost always outweighed by their hatred of the rich'.
