Mixed views on overseas aid targets

The Chairman of the Overseas Aid Committee is welcoming the substantial increase in its budget over the last ten years, from ?100,000 to ?1.8 million.

But, on Talking Heads today, George Waft MLC said the Island still had a long way to go to meet international targets.

The Manx Government has pledged to commit 0.7% of gross national income, roughly ?21 million, to overseas aid by 2013. Last year's OAC budget was ?1.8 million.

It's a move Rushen MHK Phil Gawne, who appeared on the programme with Mr Waft, wholeheartedly supports, saying we have a moral duty to help those less fortunate than ourselves:

But the overseas aid targets aren't popular with everyone.

Mr Gawne's fellow Rushen MHK Quintin Gill (pictured) thinks the projected 2013 figure is too high:
