MHK on Legislative Council proposals

A South Douglas MHK says his attempts to open up debate about the Island's parliamentary system are for the good of the Manx public.

Bill Malarkey's motion to introduce a bill which would prevent MLCs from becoming Chief Minister, or the political head of a government department, was passed by the House of Keys at this week's sitting.

It would also stop members voting on who should be Chief Minister.

Mr Malarkey (pictured) says the current system could allow someone who had never been elected by the Island's population to gain the top political job.

He says the same person could also work as a minister, with no public mandate:
