More call-outs for RNLI stations

by isleofman.com 22nd January 2008
The Isle of Man's lifeboat stations are officially getting busier.

The RNLI today released its annual lifeboat rescue statistics which show volunteers at Port St Mary, Port Erin, Peel and Ramsey dealt with an increase in call-outs last year.

Douglas received just one less call-out than in 2006.

Port St Mary was the busiest station, while in Peel there was a dramatic rise in the number of people rescued.

The report shows the Island's RNLI crews were consistently busy throughout the year.

The busiest, Port St Mary, rescued 28 people in 16 lifeboat launches. The number of people rescued by crews at Peel shot up by 81 per cent, with eleven people assisted in 2007.

Nationally the RNLI had one of its busiest years on record with more than 8,000 launches from 233 lifeboat stations around the British Isles, and that was despite a wet summer and fewer people visiting the coast.

Now the public is being asked to dig deep to ensure lives continue to be saved at sea.

This friday is RNLI SOS day, when schools, shops and businesses around the Island will be staging a range of fund raising events.
