Child abuse victim's relief

by isleofman.com 21st January 2008
A women who was abused as a child, quarter of a century ago, today spoke of her relief after her attacker was jailed for a total of four years.

Earlier, 66 year old Stuart Clayton Christian was found guilty on twelve counts of indecent assault by a jury at Douglas Courthouse.

Passing sentence, Acting Deemster Peter Birkett told Christian, a retired lorry driver, his conduct had been disgraceful, persistent and highly damaging.

Afterwards, a statement was read on behalf of the woman by Paula Gelling, of Isle of Man Victim Support.

The woman said it had taken many years for her to have the strength and courage to report to the police what had happened to her as a child.

She hoped what she has done would give victims who were suffering now or, like her, had suffered in the past, the courage to come forward.

She also hoped her experience would show that people would believe what they said.

The woman said even though she had gone on to have a happy life, what happened to her as a child had always lain dormant inside her.

At the end of the trial she thanked the seven jury members for believing her and said it was her young daughter who had given her the courage and strength to go to the police.

The woman isn't being named for legal reasons.
