Keeping data secure is vital, says MHK

More could be done to ensure personal data held on Manx residents is kept secure, an MHK is claiming.

A review of data protection and security policies was launched in the Island after the UK DHSS lost computer discs containing details of millions of families.

And today (Saturday), news of further breaches in data security - a Royal navy laptop containing the details of 600,000 potential recruits has been stolen.

The Treasury Minister Alan Bell says an internal audit here has revealed no cause for concern - but he admits improvements in security could still be made.

Rushen MHK Quintin Gill raised the issue in Tynwald this week.

He says the sharing of information with the UK authorities must be watched carefully (audio file attached):
