Body discovered under road

by isleofman.com 18th January 2008
An early Christian burial site has been found, under a road in the south of the Island.

The human remains were unearthed on Wednesday between Ronaldsway Airport and King William's College, by members of the Department of Transport's Works Division as they carried out road improvements.

Manx National Heritage Field Archaeologist Andrew Johnson was called to the site and identified the discovery as a lintel grave, common in the Isle of Man in the thousand year period from 500 AD.

The body hasn't been removed and it's hoped the site will be disturbed as little as possible.

However, Mr Johnson (pictured) says some further tests are being carried out (audio file attached):

Only one grave has been found but MNH says it could be part of a larger burial ground.

Andrew Johnson was speaking to John Moss, live on Mandate.
