Lessons to be learned by tenants

by isleofman.com 17th January 2008
Braddan Commissioners are advising tenants in all their properties to learn lessons from a fire at one of their houses in Cronkbourne Village last week.

In a media release, the local authority says it is glad to hear the tenant involved suffered no lasting injuries and that she has been inundated with offers of help, after losing many of her possessions.

However, it goes on to say the incident shows the benefits of having a household insurance policy to cover such eventualities, and the need for tenants to maintain all equipment they are responsible for under their tenancy agreement, to the best possible standard.

Graham Bell reports (text, below, from attached audio file):

As already stated by the Fire Service, the commissioners understand the cause of the blaze was an extractor fan in the bathroom, although they are stressing they hadn't been told the unit was faulty.

They say they are waiting for the final report of the investigating fire officer, but hope not to find the blaze was caused by improper use of the unit, made worse by poor cleaning.

The woman who appealed for help in the wake of the fire, on Mandate earlier this week, has been re-housed in another property on the other side of Cronkbourne Village and, the commissioners say, she is settling in well.
