Indecent assault trial latest

by isleofman.com 16th January 2008
A court has heard insinuations of perjury during the third day of an indecent assault trial at Douglas Courthouse.

Defence advocate Dawn Jones suggested to a witness that differences between a police statement he gave in January last year and what he told the court today showed he had tailored his story to fit that of the complainant.

He strongly denied the allegation and said the differences were down to the difficult circumstances in which he gave the interview, and the fact he was having to recall events from 25 years ago.

Earlier in the day another witness had played down the thoroughness of her diaries, taken from the time of the alleged sexual abuse, saying she didn't record every day to day occurrance.

Ms Jones had been using diary entries to show that many of the alleged incidents couldn't have taken place when the complainant said they had.

The defendant denies all 13 charges of indecent assault.

Reporting restrictions are in place and the case continues.
