The village of Jurby has been promised major new opportunities thanks to the construction of a new road on the Industrial Estate.

Just over ?2 million has been approved by Tynwald for the road, which Local Government Minister John Shimmin says will remove a large percentage of heavy traffic from the village.

He also said it would open up possibilities for businesses to open sites on the industrial estate, something which would be pursued along with the Department of Trade and industry.

Mr Shimmin's motion represents the second and final phase of the Jurby Village Plan, and was warmly welcomed by Michael MHK David Cannan, who said those feelings were echoed by the local commissioners and residents.

Although he questioned the time it had taken to get to this stage, he said it would be a major economic motivator for the north of the Island.

Referring to the recently rejected Clagh Vane housing scheme, Ramsey MHK Anne Craine said it was a shame residents of Ballasalla were going to miss out by not welcoming similar redevelopment proposals.

The motion was unanimously supported.
