Learning a second language

A debate has re-opened on the wisdom of allowing school pupils to give up learning a foreign language at the age of 14.

At the launch of celebrations to mark the 175th anniversary of King William's College last week, Principal Philip John (pictured) said he hoped that in 20 years time, all pupils would be fluent in a second language by the time they left school.

The Department of Education says around 60 per cent of the Island's pupils do study a language at GCSE.

Adviser on education for 11-19 year olds Paul Craine says the decision not to make it compulsory is a practical one:
