Jailed for importing drugs

by isleofman.com 14th January 2008
A 29 year-old man who brought drugs into the Island has been jailed for a total of eight months by Deemster Doyle.

Dimitrios Varthis, whose address was given as care of David Gray House, admitted four offences, importing ecstasy and cannabis bush and possessing the same.

The defendant was arrested at the Sea Terminal in June last year.

Linda Watts, prosecuting, said Varthis was found to be in possession of two small amounts of cannabis bush and 49 Ecstasy tablets, which he told police were for his own use. He said he had bought them in bulk and they would last him for about a year.

His advocate Paul O'Neill said the defendant was not a dealer in drugs, but used them to help with mild depression.

He was very remorseful and ashamed and apologised for any inconvenience he had caused.

Deemster Doyle said he did not think an exclusion order was appropriate. It was up to the defendant to leave the Island if he wished to do so.
