Archallagan inquiry continues

by isleofman.com 14th January 2008
The public inquiry into a proposed landfill site at Archallagan Plantation enters its second week today.

Last week the the Department of the Environment said there was an 'unarguable national need' for the facility, the main purpose of which would be to receive construction and demolition waste, such as items contaminated by asbestos.

The pressure group ASAP, standing for the Archallagan, Stoney Mountain and Arrassey Preservation Group, is among those opposing the ?10 million scheme.

Chairman Jill Crossley (pictured) says it's a poor location for a landfill facility, and more thought should have been given to alternative methods of disposal (audio file attached):

The landfill site at Archallagan would also take bottom ash from the incinerator, if other applications by Colas are unsuccessful; provide a backup facility for disposal of municipal waste in the event of the incinerator breaking down; and somewhere to bury animal carcasses.
