Accidental death in hospital

by isleofman.com 4th January 2008
A verdict of accidental death has been recorded on an 82 year old Onchan man by the Coroner of Inquests.

Frederick Graham Nivison Standring was admitted to Noble's Hospital on Christmas Eve after feeling short of breath, having been given antibiotics for a chest infection a couple of days earlier.

After suffering cardiac failure a scan revealed Mr Standring had an enlarged heart and he was admitted for treatment.

His daughter had visited him on December the 27th, by which time he was recovering in a ward but was able to walk around unaided.

Edward Oldham reports:

She received a call that evening saying her father had had a fall after forgetting to remove his oxygen mask before going to the toilet.

Mr Standring suffered a fractured hip and was operated on, but there were problems during his recovery.

He suffered a cardiac arrest and, after being told further heart attacks could lead to brain damage, his family decided to let him pass away.

In recording his verdict Coroner of Inquests Michael Moyle offered his condolences to Mr Standring's family and said it was one of those unfortunate accidents for which no one could be blamed.
