Death of Flashman author

The author George McDonald Fraser, who wrote the Flashman novels from his home in the Isle of Man, has died today.

The 82 year old had been suffering from a long illness.

Mr Fraser was famous around the world for his series of 12 novels centred around the bully Flashman, a character he borrowed from the 19th century novel Tom Brown's Schooldays.

All but one of the books, which entailed meticulous historical research, were written on the Island, over a period spanning more than 30 years.

Mr Fraser was a champion of his adopted home in the Isle of Man.

Speaking on Manx Radio in 2005, the 35th anniversary of the Flashman books, he said he had no plans to stop work (audio file attached):
