Death of patriot commemorated

A crowd of around 70 people have braved the elements to commemorate the death of Manx patriot Illiam Dhone at Hango Hill, Castletown.

Illiam Dhone, or William Christian, was executed there on the restoration of the King on January 2, 1663.

He had surrendered the Isle of Man to parliamentary forces after the English Civil War.

His supporters say it protected Manx rights, while his detractors see it as betrayal of the Island.

An oration in Manx was followed by one in English by trade unionist and Manx nationalist Angela Moffatt (audio file attached):
