Dippers mark the start of 2008

by isleofman.com 1st January 2008
A minute's silence marked the start of the New Year's Day dip in Peel this afternoon.

It was in memory of 18 year old Darren Self, a member of the Peel Lifeboat who died in a road accident on the Ballahutchin last month.

This year is thought to be one of the biggest turnouts for some time, and the sea temperature peaked at a rather chilly 10 celsius.

The Peel dip started back in 1983, and Chairman of the organising committee Christine Eames told Manx Radio's Chris William's where the idea came from (audio file attached):

Money raised from the event in Peel will go towards the town's lifeboat, Hospice Care and Multiple Sclerosis.

The dip in Laxey also took place at midday, and later in the afternoon a number of revellers went into the water in Castletown, wearing a variety of costumes.
