'Staggering' drink-drive figures

The number of arrests for drink-driving over the festive period has been described as 'staggering' by a senior police officer.

Inspector Richard Power says up to today 25 people have been arrested on suspicion of committing the offence.

Of those, 18 have been charged, three have been bailed pending further enquiries and four were released after being found to be under the legal limit.

He is surprised the number is so high given what he describes as excellent awareness campaigns by the Island's media, police force and the Department of Transport.

Inspector Power has this warning for anyone thinking about getting behind the wheel after a few drinks:
