Farmers expect another hard year

by isleofman.com 27th December 2007
Manx Radio's Farming Correspondent says 2007 has been a year of quite considerable highs and lows for the industry.

John Kennaugh says the United Kingdom's foot and mouth crisis was a great scare, and farmers here were extremely relieved the disease didn't make it to the Island.

Mr Kennaugh (pictured) believes if it ever came, it would be the end of Manx farming.

He says the main successes in the past year have been the establishment of a regular, fully accredited farmers' market and the resultant formation of closer relationships between producers and consumers.

But he thinks next year will be just as hard, if not harder, for agriculture in the Isle of Man (audio file attached):

You can hear more of that interview with John Kennaugh in the News Review of the Year, at midday on Sunday, December 30.
