Eleven years for drug offences

by isleofman.com 19th December 2007
A 24 year-old man who brought a car packed with over ?140,000 worth of drugs to the Isle of Man has been jailed for a total of eleven years by Deemster Doyle.

Steven Lee Hagan from Bebbington on the Wirral admitted importing cocaine; possessing the drug with another person, with intent to supply; importing cannabis bush; and supplying cannabis bush to another person.

Linda Watts, prosecuting, said Hagan was arrested in Douglas at about 8.30pm on March 18 this year.

Police followed a car driven off the boat by Hagan from the Sea Terminal. They stopped him and the vehicle was searched at police headquarters, where cocaine with a street value of ?140,880 was found in a door panel. The cocaine weighed 1,761 grams.

Evidence showed the defendant had given cannabis bush with a street value of ?31.82 to another person, who is currently awaiting sentence.

Hagan's advocate said his client had agreed under threats to carry the drug in order to pay a ?3,000 debt. He had acted as a courier but had not received any payment.

Hagan was deeply remorseful and had been co-operative with police.

Deemster Doyle said people who became involved with Class A drugs could expect significant custodial sentences, adding that the aggravating factor in this case was the quantity.
