ACHE meets to discuss transport

The Health Minister's suitability for his job has been questioned as a row over the cancellation of a transport contract continues.

At a meeting on Saturday the Department of Health and Social Security confirmed that it wouldn't be renewing a contract with local firm Protours for the transfer of adults with learning disabilities to and from their day care centre.

It is claimed alternative services will be provided and the Department says the move will save ?160,000 a year.

Carers group ACHE had hoped to persuade the department to delay the decision for six months while a proper assessment of the service was carried out, and say they now have no option but to present a petition of doleance to the courts in the new year to overturn the decision.

Acting chairman of ACHE John Sheppard says the Minister is only looking at one aspect of the issue, and hasn't shown any willingness to be flexible:
