MHKs doubts over aid

The Treasury Minister has revealed the Government will have to up its overseas aid budget by nearly ?4 million a year, for the next five years, if it is to meet its target figure.

In his reply to Rushen MHK Quintin Gill's written Tynwald question, Allan Bell said that, taking a number of factors into account, the sum available would need to be ?21.2 million by 2013.

The figure is based on the government's pledge to commit 0.7% of gross national income to overseas aid by that year.

The latest contribution was ?1.8 million for 2007-8, but Mr Gill has his doubts about future targets:
