Government's actions praised

A former Inspector with Greater Manchester Constabulary is praising the Manx government for its actions in averting a possible police strike.

The Island’s Police Federation warned officers were prepared to fight for the right to strike - unless their 2.5 per cent pay award was funded in full.

A row erupted after the UK Home Secretary Jackie Smith refused to backdate pay, meaning officers would receive a rise of just 1.9 per cent.

However, Home Affairs Minister Martyn Quayle’s confirmed local officers will receive the full increase.
