Heavy fine for fake currency offence

by isleofman.com 30th November 2007
A 30 year old man who had items which could be used to manufacture currency has been given a four month prison sentence suspended for two years by High Bailiff Michael Moyle, and fined ?5,000.

Herve Kamgang, from Birmingham admitted a charge of having items for the purpose of fraud.

Inspector Michael Musson said the defendant was arrested on November 19 on suspicion of having counterfeit currency. Items likely to be used for the manufacture of currency were found in a holdall which was in his possession. They were pieces of paper cut to the size of bank notes and tape for wrapping them.

Mr Moyle said it was a rather complicated matter but there was clear pre-meditation and determination in the course of action which the defendant took.

Advocate John Wright said the defendant was from Cameroon and he was permitted to stay in the United Kingdom until next May. He came to the Isle of Man with two others who were not before the court.

Kamgang was excluded from the Isle of Man for five years.
