Holiday nostalgia at Sayle Gallery

by isleofman.com 24th November 2007
An exhibition opening at the Sayle Gallery in Tynwald Mills this week will, according to the Manx Heritage Foundation, bring back happy memories for many people.

It's about Joe's Bar, a mock hostelry in Castle Street in Douglas, which was visited by thousands of holidaymakers in the 1950s and 60s.

It was actually a specially built set with a mock tap room, a counter with bottles and price lists and burlesque props such as giant glasses, canes and straw hats.

Tourists paid to have their pictures taken drinking at the bar while dressed in the regalia.

The exhibition will feature many original photographs which have recently been found by the bar owner's son.

It's open from 11.30am to 5pm on Tuesdays to Fridays, 1pm to 5pm on Saturdays and 1.30pm to 4.30pm on Sundays.
