Government won't underwrite festival

by isleofman.com 22nd November 2007
Tourism Minister Adrian Earnshaw says underwriting a major music festival wouldn’t be a good use of government money.

He was asked in Tynwald whether he would support something similar to the Peel Bay Festival in future years, given its success in TT 2007.

But Mr Earnshaw says the cost to the taxpayer could be as much as ?300,000 and there would be no guarantee it would break even.

He says attracting enough festival-goers would be extremely difficult (audio file attached):

Garff MHK Steve Rodan was one of the few members to support the idea of the government underwriting a major music festival.

He told Manx Radio the Island should capitalise on the rave reviews won by this year's event in Peel.
