Director defends transport change

The Director of Social Services says their decision not to renew a Protours contract to transport people with learning difficulties is not purely for financial reasons.

Speaking live on Manx Radio's Mandate programme this morning (Weds), Andrew Swithinbank said it's really about taking a fresh look at how the department provides transportation to and from its day care services.

His comments were a response to ACHE spokesman John Sheppard, whose care organisation has criticised the decision.

They say health officials have failed to adequately investigate the social consequences of the decision and feel it smacks of a cost-cutting exercise.

But Mr Swithinbank says it's time to tailor the transportation system to individual needs:
