by isleofman.com 16th November 2007
The skippers of two Irish registered fishing vessels, which were found to be carrying undersized scallops, have been fined a total of ?11,000.

Isle of Man sea fisheries officers boarded the vessels of Ciaran Whelan and Michael Harvey alongside Battery Pier in Douglas.

A substantial quantity of scallops were found on board both vessels, with shells below the legal minimum size of 110mm.

Whelan and Harvey, both of County Wexford, admitted the offences.

High Bailiff Michael Moyle imposed a ?6,000 fine on Whelan and ?5,000 on Harvey with ?150 costs each.

The vessels were detained until the fine was paid and all undersized scallops disposed of.
