Nursing home plea to government

by isleofman.com 15th November 2007
The Government needs to do more to meet the cost of nursing home care, according to a woman whose says her uncle is more than ?1,000 in debt because he can't afford the fees.

The matter was raised in the House of Keys this week by Onchan MHK Peter Karran, who claimed war teterans were struggling to keep a roof over their heads.

DHSS member Juan Watterson confirmed five out of seven private nursing homes had raised their fees above that recommended by the Office of Fair Trading.

This woman, who asked not to be named, says her 84 year-old uncle has no money left for personal spending.

And she believes more needs to be done to support elderly people (audio file attached):

That was a contribution to this morning's Talking Heads Programme.

Manx Radio was unable to get a comment from the Department of Health and Social Security.
