Councillor says park closures necessary

by isleofman.com 12th November 2007
The decision to lock the gates of five public squares and parks in Douglas is regrettable but necessary.

That's the view of Douglas Councillor and former mayor Betty Quirk, who lives in Derby Square, one of those subject to the winter closures, from 4pm until 8.30 the following morning.

Hilary Park, Centenary Park, and Hutchinson and Woodburn Squares will also be locked-up after complaints about groups of youths making a disturbance and committing acts of vandalism.

Mrs Quirk (pictured) says she has some sympathy with the youngsters who desparately need a suitable meeting place (audio file attached):

Betty Quirk was speaking to Dan Davies on Talking Heads.
