Major report still on the shelf

by isleofman.com 12th November 2007
A major report into the future of government in the Isle of Man remains on the shelf, more than a year after it was published.

Since taking office, Chief Minister Tony Brown has been in no hurry to consider the study, which cost the taxpayer ?80,000.

Among its proposals is the privatisation of some services currently provided by government.

The report's far-reaching remit was to review the Scope and Structure of Government in the Isle of Man.

It was published before last November's general election, although the then Chief Minister Donald Gelling said it would be for his successor and the new House of Keys to consider.

But that has yet to happen, despite the new Chief Minister Tony Brown having twice indicated it would be debated by the end of this year.

Mr Brown is known to be unhappy with some of the reports recommendations, including the privatisation of public transport, the National Sports Centre, the Villa Marina and Gaeity complex and the MEA.

Three authors of the report, former Chief Minister Miles Walker, former Clerk of Tynwald Robert Quayle and former MHK for Ayre Edgar Quine discussed the document on this evening's Agenda.
