Chief Constable's Annual Report

by isleofman.com 9th November 2007
Neighbourhood policing is highlighted in the Chief Constable's Annual Report which goes before Tynwald this month.

Mike Culverhouse says the period will be "viewed as the year in which the constabulary re-focused its activities under the auspices of five new neighbourhood policing teams".

Stuart Peters reports:

Mr Culverhouse says the way Neighbourhood policing teams have developed during the year exceeded his expectations.

The report shows crime levels on the Island have increased, although they remain at half the UK's rate, and detection rate for all offences was 55%, the highest in the British Isles.

It claims that media reporting of anti-social behaviour and minor crimes can make the Island appear less safe, as higher detection rates inevitably lead to more prosecutions, which in turn mean more newspaper and radio reporting. This gives some people the view that the community is deteriorating, which it's claimed is not the case.

A community satisfaction survey carried out earlier this year showed 98% of people feel safe living in the Island.

Mr Culverhouse, who retires at the end of the year, is currently on signed off work on medical advice:
