Minister rejects leachate 'solution'

Putting leachate from the Raggatt Tip in Peel into the River Neb has been described in the House of Keys as a potential 'environmental disaster'.

In response to the suggestion from Peel MHK Tim Crookall, Environment Minister John Shimmin told members that removing the substance cost nearly ?37 thousand pounds annually.

Mr Shimmin (pictured) said leachate would always be a by-product of the tip and he reacted robustly to a suggestion from Onchan MHK David Quirk that the ?37,000 should be spent on some form of treatment for the substance:
