Driver admitted responsibility - claim

by isleofman.com 29th October 2007
A Foxdale woman involved in a road accident in which a Port Erin man was killed admitted the collision was her fault, it was claimed in court today.

Patricia Power, of the Eairy, East Foxdale, is alleged to have made the comment at the scene of the crash in which 47 year-old painter and decorator John Hughes lost his life.

The claim was made by a witness at the trial of Mrs Power, who denies driving without due care and attention on the Ballamodha Straight, last November.

The court heard this afternoon from a number of witnesses who were overtaken by Mr Hughes just before the fatal crash.

One of them, Frank Proctor, a biker of 25 years, said Mr Hughes overtook in a controlled manner.

Shortly afterwards, he came upon the accident scene.

Mr Proctor checked on Mrs Power who, he said, muttered words to the effect that: 'it was my fault, I’m going to get done for dangerous driving.'

Mr Proctor was one of three people in a car driven by Doctor Chris Jagus, all of whom said they saw Mr Hughes overtake safely, with nothing to suggest a ridiculous speed.

The trial will resume tomorrow morning.
