Cost-cutting measure questioned

A local union representative has questioned the wisdom of a proposed cost-cutting measure from the Department of Local Government and the Environment.

The Whitley Council's Bernard Moffatt says if the Government is looking for ways to save taxpayers' money, privatising its office canteen wouldn't make much difference relatively speaking.

The Council also feels putting the catering contract out to private tender will lead to workers losing out when it comes to wages, holiday and sick pay and pension entitlements.

Figures revealed by DLGE Minister John Shimmin in the House of Keys showed the facility operated at an annual loss of about ?30,000.

But Mr Moffatt says there are much larger areas of expenditure which should be looked at first (audio file attached):
